    Laverne Jones runs fastes 100m in the world at Texas Relays...

    Laverne Jones Runs world’s fastest electronic time in the world…

    The Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation announced today that V.I. multiple national record holder recorded the world’s fastest electronic time at the Texas Relays. It was a big meet for the early outdoor season as Jones time of 11.03 (wind aided) was the fastest of no less than 10 women running under 11.4 seconds in the meet. “It felt really great”, said Jones. It was her second race of the season, which was a 11.45 under opposite conditions consisting of a 2.4 headwind. She explained that her training is going very well. She ran 52.65 to win the 400m at the Victor Lopez Classic at Rice University last month.

    Jones next competition will be at the Penn Relays where she will run the 400m and sprint medley relays. Closer to home, she will run in the IAAF Grand Prix meets in Ponce, Puerto Rico and Martinique in May.

    Jones is a professional track and field athlete. She graduated from the St. Croix Educational Complex High School in St. Croix, Virgin Islands where she was coached by Devon Peters. She was a multiple All-American at Barton County Community College and Oklahoma University. She is a two-time Olympian (Athens and Beijing).


    VITFF Bulletin # 4-21-07 Laverne Jones sets V.I. National Record in 400 meters at 80th Kansas Relays…
    The Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation announced today that Laverne Jones set a national record in the Invitational 400m of the 80th Kansas Relays with a time of 51.47 as she was caught from behind in the down the stretch by Mary Wineberg who won the race in 51.19. Jones broke the previous record set by Ameerah Bello of 52.07 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago on May 8, 1998.

    Jones, a world class sprinter for distances ranging from 60m to 400m, has committed to run the 400m in the Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro for the Virgin Islands National Pan American Games Team. She is scheduled to run in the Guadeloupe Gran Prix where she reported to V.I. Daily News that she will run 100m and 200m on May 1, then on to Brazil where she will all three sprints. From there it’s on to the IAAF Golden League Bislet Games, Oslo, Norway, where she will run the 100m and her first effort in the highly prestigious competition.
