Allison Peter finds comfort zone at World Youth Championships in the 200m...

The Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation announced today that the day after winning the Silver Medal at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Suditrol, Italy, V.I. National Team sprinter, Allison Peter advanced to the semi-finals of the 200m with a time of 23.76, the fastest qualifying time for the day of the 56 girls in the event. 100m Gold Medal winner Jodie Williams of Great Britian had the second fastest time 23.96. The stage is set for the semi finals which will be run on Saturday.

VITFF officials and her coach Devon Peters, strongly believe that the win in the 100m will prove to be an incredible confidence builder for Peter leading up to the 200m challenge. In the semi-finals six sprinters from the Caribbean including Peter, advanced. Two Jamaicans (Siedatha Palmer and Ceilia Walters); one each from the Dominican Republic (Fanny Chalas); Grenada (Nickhelia John) and Cuba (Dulaimi Odelin). The United States has two sprinters who advanced (Aston Purvis the Bronze Medal winner in the 100m and Briana Nelson).

Of the 56 six runners in the first heat 24 advance to the semi-finals and of that group 8 will compete for the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals on Sunday. Peter, Williams and Odelin appear to be the ones to beat leading up to the race to decide the World Champion.

VITFF Bulletin July 9, 2009 UPDATE

The Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation announced today that Allison Peter won the Silver Medal at the IAAF World Youth Track and Field Championships in Suditrol, Italy today. She becomes the first Virgin Islands Track and Field athlete to win a medal in a world championship.

Peter advanced through three rounds of 100m races poised to do well in the final. In the final she was once again up against the fastest 100m sprinter in the world Jodie Williams, the Great Britain sensation who she pushed in the semi-finals to get there. Peter earned one of the best lanes in the race (lane #4) by virtue of her performances in the preliminary rounds and was lined-up next to Williams, the world leader. Peter ran a personal best 11.47 and Williams 11.39; Aston Pervis of the USA was third in 11.48. The race was very competitive as two of the 8 finalist ran personal best including Peter and Anasztazia Nguyen of Hungry; two ran season bests (Shauna Thompson of Great Britian and Purvis of the USA) and Williams ran a world leading time.

Peter will have the opportunity to go up against the very best again, most likely some of the same runners in the 200m which starts on Friday.

The western hemisphere, particularly the Caribbean and the USA are known for having the very best sprinters in the world. Of the eight finalists, three were from the Caribbean, two from the USA and three from Europe.

When Peter receives her silver medal, for the first time in history, the Virgin Islands flag will be raised at a medal ceremony in a world championships.
